COMIT: Collaborative Multi Information Analysis Toolkit

The COMIT technology is a semantic framework that uses natural language processing (NLP) and ontology-driven methods to provide information discovery, sense making, and presentation in a dynamic, collaborative environment.

Advancements in modern data gathering systems have resulted in unprecedented amounts of data, and modern processing capabilities are able to transform and translate that data at ever-increasing rates.  The challenge for defense and security analysts is being able to find, corroborate, and interpret actionable information in this data flood.

The COMIT technology was originally designed for the intelligence community to provide directed insight into coordinated activities and relationships among people, organizations, and locations (social and geospatial networks), as well as events or behaviors (event networks).  COMIT is a semantic framework that supports information discovery, sense making, and presentation in a dynamic, collaborative environment. COMIT uses Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques to extract information and knowledge from large stores of multi-source text, image, and geospatial data and uses an ontology-driven approach for semantic tagging and knowledge integration from text and image-derived tags.

The COMIT technology also provides automated support for advanced semantic search and discovery from large multi-source tagged data collections and new methods for interactive visualization to support collaborative sense making and consequently enhanced situational awareness.  COMIT also allows users to generate custom reports based on the query results.

The COMIT technology significantly reduces the ‘data-to-decision’ time through the use of semantic and collaborative visual analytics techniques.  COMIT users will also realize substantial gains in the quality of shared situational awareness (via the fusion of information retrieved from multiple sources) and significant increases in the ability to exploit information and knowledge embedded within the source data.
